Camille Wyllie received the award at a celebration to mark Jamaica’s 45th anniversary of Independence on August 11.

Wyllie, who hails from Rose Bank, said that it wasn’t easy leaving her family behind in 1998, and when she arrived in French speaking Quebec, adjusting to the new language was difficult. She however challenged herself to overcome the barriers, and enrolled in a French programme offered by the Jamaican Association of Montreal.

The awards ceremony heard from various speakers including Mervin Rotrand, City Councillor for Montreal, and Her Excellency Evadne Coye, High Commissioner of Jamaica.

Wyllie, who is the daughter of Sandra Lavia and Ken Wyllie and the step daughter of Desmond Lavia, described receiving the award as “an emotional moment for me, but it shows that hard work brings success.”

Wyllie intends to further her studies in the area of Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention and then Criminal law.
