The campaign, which is being conducted by the JEMS organization in collaboration with the Central Water and Sewage Authority, seeks to mobilize national groups, community based groups, the private sector, churches, and other voluntary organization to engage in clean up activities along the coast and beaches and within communities.

Country coordinator, Andrew Simmons told SEARCHLIGHT that the National clean up is scheduled to take place at the same time as the International Coastal Cleanup Day September 15th.

In an effort to keep the coastal and marine environment safe for both tourists and nationals alike, people all over the world will be cleaning beaches, lakes, rivers, tributaries, salt ponds and mangroves areas.

“When the garbage is collected it would be divided in different groups to determine what kind of garbage is generated inland and those that are ship waste,” said Simmons.

“The information would be placed on data sheets which would be sent to JEMS office, who will send the information to Ocean Conservancy in Washington,” he continued.

Ocean Conservancy, the group which is responsible for promoting healthy and diverse ocean ecosystems, will then review the documents that were sent to them by the organization, and would then send back the information to them.

According to a press release, the information will be used to educate persons and be specific in who is targeted to combat the issue of indiscriminate garbage disposal or inadequate facilities for the garbage if this is the case.

A meeting should have been held yesterday to inform representatives from various organizations and community groups about what is expected to be achieved during the clean up campaign.(SB)
