Youth at SVG Coast Guard programme get good advice

The participants of the SVG Coast Guard youth development summer programme have been told that they should not seek to be ordinary but rather to excel far beyond ordinary expectations.{{more}}

This was the advice given to them at a brief opening ceremony at the Coast Guard’s Calliaqua base by Victor Peters, Senior Advisor at Sagicor Insurance Company, one of the major sponsors of the Coast Guard’s summer programme along with the National Commercial Bank.

Just over 40 secondary school students from around the country sailed off last Monday July 16, in phase one of what is the 14th year of the summer programme.

Peters said that his company was glad to be a part of something that will prevent idleness among the youths.

He told the youngsters that the course will not only teach them the various maritime skills but should challenge them also to embrace the Coast Guard’s watch words of loyalty, discipline and team work.

Speaking on behalf of the Coast Guard, Lt Dean Henry said that it was the vision of the Coast Guard to mould the youths.

He also told students that the Coast Guard uses the summer programme as a recruiting tool, hoping to inspire participants to consider a career in the Coast Guard in the future.

Among the subject areas to be taught are: navigation, personal development, financial planning, conflict resolution, swimming and life saving, substance abuse prevention and leadership development.

After the first phase which should end tomorrow, Saturday 21st, a new batch of students will participate in phase two from July 23-28 which will be followed by phase three from August 06-11. (KJ)
