The funding for this project comes in the form of a grant from the Japanese government.

At the signing, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that the project is an important one because it will not only improve fish landings, but improve safety. The site will include breakwater facilities, cold storage, shops, a fish market, offices, lockers, a fish tackle shop, an area for drying fish nets and a stand by generator.

The government of Japan hopes that this facility will aid in the development of the region and increase job opportunities and provide increased income for the fishermen.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to praise the Minister of Agriculture and Parliamentary Representative for the area, Montgomery Daniel. “He took the ball and ran with it very well”. An enthused Gonsalves went on to say that “Minister Daniel is a helluva representative”.

Charge d’Affairs ad interim to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, of the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago, Kiyoshi Takeuchi said that this venture will further develop the relationship between Japan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and he has full confidence that it will increase jobs and money for fishermen.

A very candid and animated Prime Minister Gonsalves stated that this government is for the whole of St.Vincent and the Grenadines and illustrated this by pointing out that Owia in North Windward has been the part of that constituency with the least votes for the Unity Labour Party (ULP), yet Owia has been the recipient of many development projects.
