Adolescent groups hold play it safe march, rally

In the midst of Carnival activities, adolescent groups from the Pembroke district took to the streets of Barrouallie on Sunday July 1 in a March and rally to encourage persons in the community to play it safe for the festival.

In addressing the rally, head of the Pembroke Adolescent group Samuel Joyles reminded the residents that the issue of HIV and AIDS is still alive and well.{{more}}

According to Joyles, the HIV/AIDS unit saw the need to host the march in the area as persons tend to let down their ‘guard’ during the Carnival season and tend to become carefree.

He said society is becoming wild many things are happening to both adults and young people.

Joyles was able the highlight the fact that despite the stigma that is being placed on young people, he is of the opinion that they are the ones that are filled with a lot of information, talent and wisdom hence the reason for the march to have these young people to spread the news.

“I think that the best set of people who should really talk to other young people about HIV/AIDS is young people,” Joyles stated. “If we could get young people to do productive things together we would be able to restrict the incidence of crime and violence in our community.

The youths also spread their message through song, drama and Choral Speeches. They also used the opportunity to establish an adolescents group within the area.

The march and rally was held under the theme: “For the sake of you and me let’s try to make this world HIV free”.(SB)
