Kirby wins award at Ohio University
Shermalon Kirby, a graduate student in international studies at Ohio University, won the Voinovich & MSES award in the Telecommunications (Graduate 1) category at the 2007 Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Fair May 3. Shermalon, from St. Vincent & Grenadines won the award for the project âCampaign For Rural Renewal.â{{more}}
Ohio University awarded prizes to 103 students for their research and creative endeavors at the 6th Annual Student Research and Creative Activity Fair, which was held at the Convocation Center. Winning projects included a documentary film on Ohioâs controversial role in the 2004 presidential election, a study on optimizing fuel cells that use alternative energy sources, a new treatment for pancreatic cancer and an analysis of advertising in Cosmopolitan magazine.
More than 470 undergraduate, graduate and medical students and post-doctoral fellows presented their original work at the event, which marked the biggest exhibition of student Ohio University research, scholarship and creative work to date. A panel of 96 faculty, staff, industry and community judges honored first- and second-place winners with cash prizes for their projects.
âOhio University values the spirit of discovery through research, scholarship and creative activity. The Student Research and Creative Activity Fair is an event that allows Ohio University to showcase the imagination and intellectual curiosity of its students,â said Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis.
About 750 undergraduate students and many graduate, medical and postdoctoral students participate in research and creative work at Ohio University each year to gain more hands-on experience in their majors, to help them gain entry to graduate school or to prepare them for future careers.
The event is co-sponsored by the Vice President for Research, the Office of the Provost and the Office of the President at Ohio University.
