The West Indies Jaycees, now re-named Junior Chamber International (JCI) West Indies, is partnering with the United Nations to ensure that global issues are tackled with the help of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). JCI West Indies is focussing on Reducing Child Mortality and Developing a Global Partnership for Development, which are two of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals, Matthias said.

Matthias, who is only the second Vincentian to hold the office of President of JCI West Indies (former speaker of the House of Assembly Monty Maule being the first), said while this country does not have a high mortality rate, other countries in the Caribbean and the Americas face these problems and he, along with delegate David Charles from Jamaica, and Michel Martin also from St Vincent and the Grenadines presented reports to the UN on what has been done so far and other projects that were in the planning stages.

The JCI West Indies President said that his organization shared an excellent relationship with former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and they want to ensure that the rapport is deepened with the new Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. (SG)
