Local performances turn regional heads
Regional directors of social security as well as local delegates and media received a treat last Sunday, through the special performances that were a part of the opening ceremony of the 18th CARICOM Heads of Social Security meeting.{{more}}
The practice of interspersing official ceremonies with various cultural performances has been a way for groups or organizations to spruce up a usually routine opening or closing ceremonies consisting mainly of speeches and addresses.
Sundayâs ceremony was no exception, except for the quality of performances rendered by persons who were performing outside of their everyday professions.
Tradesman Gideon Solyen performed a touching rendition of the song âHe lifts me upâ originally done by Josh Groban.
Soleyn, a welder by trade, received a rousing round of applause for his effort, which was referred to by delegates as an inspirational.
Next to perform after a number of addresses was NIS employee Valina Browne.
Browne performed a dance routine much to the delight of all in attendance.
Bringing the curtains down on the performances as well as the proceedings was national and regionally acclaimed group the New Kingstown Chorale.
The chorale, which consists a number of current and retired professionals, performed a number of well received folks songs.
After their repertoire, the group was called on to perform a couple more songs to which they obliged.(JJ)
