Youlou sponsoring Growing Young Artists

08.June.07

YOULOU ARTS FOUNDATION will sponsor the “Growing Young SVG Artists” programme this year for the seventh consecutive year, from July 16 to August 3.

The “Art camp” as it is popularly called, offers children between the ages of 5 to 12 the opportunity to experience a visual arts education in the form of an art camp during the months of July and August. {{more}} The programme focuses on educating children about traditional SVG art and culture, and also provides exposure to art in general, including different media and techniques. This is achieved by collaborating with various artists and artisans on the island and with art foundations from different parts of the world.

This year, Shervone Neckles will be the guest instructor at the camp. She was born in the United States of Grenadian parents and has family in St. Vincent in the Layou area. Neckles has Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, from Queens College, majoring in sculpture, and is currently enrolled at Columbia University working on her Master’s Degree in Art Education.

Art Camp 2007 will be held in 3 locations, Kingstown, Barrouallie, and Georgetown. The locations where the camp will take place are as follows: Kingstown-Thomas Saunders Secondary School, Richmond Hill, Barrouallie – Barrouallie Community Centre, Georgetown – The Georgetown Government School. The art camp will be held for three weeks starting on July 16 through August 3. The sessions will be from 9:am to 12 noon. Each location caters for 40 children.

This year the theme for the programme will be “Creatures and The Deep Blue Sea”.

At the Kingstown location there will be a Textile Workshop. This workshop is for girls aged 9 to 15 years old, who are interested in learning to knit, crochet, hand embroider and sew. The focus will be on decorating fabric to make tapestries.

At the end of the camp there will be an exhibition of the children’s work. The registration forms for the “Growing Young SVG Artists” program in the Kingstown area can be obtained at the Theo Saunders Shop and Professional Secretarial Services & Consultancy Office. The registration fee is $60.
