Courts comedy challenge, no laughing matter

There seems to be a shortage of comedic talent here in St Vincent and the Grenadines. At least, this is the impression that was given last Saturday June 2nd at the Peace Memorial Hall when Vincentians failed to turn up in their numbers for the highly publicised Courts St Vincent Limited Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) comedy challenge “Road to Stardom.”{{more}}

Only nine competitors turned up. Six persons made it through the preliminary rounds including: Jeffery “Snuffy” Martin, Haniff Charles, Nadine James, Earl “Ole George” Daniel, Sylvia Williams and Maurice Horne. The six finalists will compete on June 23 for the chance to win $2000. The lucky winner will then represent St Vincent in Grenada for the chance to win $5000 and a one-year advertising contract as the Courts OECS mascot.

However, those comedians who did take the stage delivered their material with poise and flair serving those seated with a belly full of laughter.

With an allotted time frame of only five minutes, one of the jokes delivered by funny man Haniff Charles made mention of a lady who owned an audio cassette but no cassette player to play it in. She then journeyed to marathon walker “Ole George’s residence to ask for a player to borrow. Ole George’s wife came to the door and asked what she wanted, the lady replied, “I have a cassette here and I want to borrow your Walk man.”

Marketing Executive of Courts, Alexis Harry said that despite the publicity given to the event, it seemed as if Vincentians were afraid to show their comedic skills. He said they were looking to choose ten finalists but had to drop that number to six because of the low turnout of persons. He however urged the few that took part to give their best and said that who ever emerges winner at the finals, will do St Vincent and the Grenadines proud in Grenada.
