NLA urges youths to take up fishing

Young people who are interested in the fishing industry are being called upon to take up the profession, as there are a lot of job opportunities in the field.

This call was made by the Chairman of the Fisherman’s Day Committee Leonard Charles on May 16th, as he received $20,000 from the National Lotteries Authority for Fisherman’s month activities.{{more}}

Speaking at the ceremony, Charles told the media that fishing was one of the country’s greatest resources and there is a large potential for business in the field once fishermen have all the right equipment.

According to Charles, the industry is focusing on expanding their fleet, since over the past years fishermen have been using equipment that is very expensive to maintain and which consumed a lot of fuel when the men go great distances – all without a guaranteed catch.

“There is a system in place for our fishers to purchase bigger vessels with lower operational cost which would be more economical,” Charles stated.

He is also hoping to reach the stage where fish would become more readily available to the average person since in his opinion, fish is too expensive for the public at present.

“The cost of fish is too high hence the need for us to gravitate to a better product, a better product means more fish as at a considerably reduced price,” Charles stated.

For the rest of month the members of the committee will be hosting two fish nights at Heritage Square on the 18th and 25th and will be visiting various schools in the area.

On the 28th of this month, Fisherman’s Month will climax with a grand ceremony at the Calliaqua Playing Field.(SB)
