Baptiste: Dick kept saying ‘This world nah fair’

Tom “Dick” Sutherland spent the last night of his life as he would usually do when he was in Sandy Bay.

He visited his aunt’s home and shared a meal and a few drinks with his long time friend.{{more}}

“Dickie came by the house about 10 last night (Tuesday). We just talk a little bit, he take out some food and he went outside. After that I went to sleep and wake up late this morning.”

Jane Sutherland reflected on the last time she saw her nephew. It was no different from the times before. There seemed nothing sinister about him as they talked casually for the last time.

As he left the house with his food he sat and talked and drank with his old friend Stafford Baptiste.

“He kept repeating over and over that ‘This world nah fair,’” Baptiste told Searchlight. “I asked him what he was talking about but he never answer, he just keep saying it over and over.”

Although most people knew about the troubled relationship Sutherland had with his common-law wife Wandalyn Shallow, no one expected the situation would take such a turn, since Sutherland was considered one of the most caring of fathers.

“I asked him about what happened in Canouan, and he tell me he just wanted to make up with her. I never hear him say anything about murder or suicide,” his aunt said.

“He would always go visit the kids at school.”

“If Dickie had one last dollar, and he didn’t have anything to eat, he would make sure that his children eat.” Baptiste added.

“I know he had his problems and was always depressed, but it never cross my mind that he would do something like this,” he said.

“He loved his kids.”
