Refurbished Standards Bureau offices open

At a cost of over half a million dollars, this country now has a newly refurbished Bureau of Standards building at Campden Park to evaluate, test and grade the quality of goods and services in this country.

At the official opening of the facility last Monday, Director Ezra Ledger outlined that the Bureau would create an environment for what he coined as Standards, Quality Assurance and Metrology (SQUARM).{{more}}

Ledger said that the bureau among other things, would facilitate and ensure industrial efficiency and assist in industrial development as well as promote public and industrial welfare, health, safety and safeguard against negative effects to the environment.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves assured everyone that the legislative framework to guarantee higher quality standards in goods and services would continue to be a priority for his government. He pointed out that SVGBS was legally established by the Standards Act Number 70 of 1992 but was later amended in 2001 when his government was elected into office. Dr Gonslaves said that the goal is to make the SVGBS a statutory body by the end of the year so that the SVGBS could independently perform their duty.

Recognition awards were given to Bertrand Harnanan, Erica Mc Intosh and Philmore Isaacs for their contribution in helping to develop the Standards Bureau while special awards were given to employees Carlos Williams and Haydeen Charles.

CROSQ Executive Secretary Ken Mullins and Technical Coordinator of TSAU/CARICOM Yvonne Holder were also in attendance and praised the work done by the SVGBS.
