Nurses off to train in Atlanta

Two nurses that are currently stationed at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital left the state this week for Atlanta for six weeks where they will work with internationally acclaimed Infectious Disease doctors and their staffs, and get the opportunity to participate in the care of patients infected with HIV/AIDS at all levels including at clinics, hospitals, medical offices and home care.{{more}}

The programme, which is sponsored by the Gallup Services Medical Network of Infectious Disease Consultants and Milton Hall Surgical Associates will give the nurses the opportunity to learn about the treatment methodology used in the US that can be adapted to conditions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and will also be introduced to medications and supplies currently available through international pharmaceutical companies that could be acquired in the Caribbean.

At stage two of the project, once the training is complete, these nurses will be enlisted to help in educating the general public throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Accepting the tickets for the trip, Inga Mason and Cecily Haynes, the two staff nurses, thanked the Peace Corps for donating the tickets and said that whatever they learnt they will be putting into practice.

Five more nurses are expected to leave the state after the first six-week programme is finished.

Certified Otolaryngology and Facial and Reconstructive Surgeon Jeffery M. Gallups asked the students to bring back what they have learnt and to share their experience with those who are about to go.

The nurses received their tickets on Monday March 19th. The programme is being run in association with the local Peace Corps.
