Taj wins Math competition
âOur students must be confident that they can succeed at math and our teachers must be able to communicate that confidence to the students,â said Deputy Education Chief Luis DeShong while addressing the JU-C Mathematics Competition Prize Giving Ceremony at the Anglican Pastoral Center on Tuesday. DeShong urged teachers to use the projects that were displayed as ways to enhance their math lessons at school.{{more}}
The Curriculum Development Unit of the Ministry of Education organized the competition so that students would develop a deeper love and appreciation for mathematics. Kenneth Holder of the Unit told SEARCHLIGHT that there were over 300 entries but 25 made it to the finals.
The Campden Park Multi-Purpose Centre whose students used their woodwork skills to create a math game was specially mentioned.
The St Vincent Grammar School was judged the most outstanding school and Chezaul Walker of that school was awarded 4th prize for his project titled âJourney to Mathsâ. Oral Jacobs of the JP Eustace Secondary School was awarded 3rd prize with âMaths to Graphicsâ, while Khodi King, the lone female of St Joseph Convent Kingstown copped 2nd prize with âShake and Makeâ.
First prize was awarded to Taj Lee of the St Vincent Grammar School; he was also awarded a special prize for being the most outstanding student. Taj is no stranger to the limelight having won numerous competitions while a student of the St. Maryâs R.C. School.
Rufus Khodra a representative of Oxford University Press gave all students who participated in the finals of the competition a copy of the Oxford Primary Maths Dictionary.
Donald Jack of JU-C (Bottlers Limited) said that his company is 100 percent committed to the competition as school children represent their largest customer base.
