Bishop Friday makes call to local media

His Lordship Bishop Leopold Friday sounded a call for the local media to assume its responsibility in helping to deliver good governance to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“We need to carefully look at the role of the media which has the ability to influence governance.”

Bishop Friday’s call was heard last Sunday evening at Heritage Square as over two hundred persons from different church denominations gathered for a service of thanksgiving to mark the 27th anniversary of Independence for St Vincent and the Grenadines. It was held under the theme: “Undaunted by Difficulties: Unbent by Setbacks and Unrelenting in the Pursuit of the Common Goal”. {{more}}

Friday said that our young people today are going astray and the media is not always portraying the correct messages.

“Random promotion and distribution of condoms are being advertised, what message we are sending?” he asked.

The Bishop went on to tackle issues relating to the HIV pandemic and said that there must be a holistic approach as a nation in helping to combat the pandemic.

“HIV has the potential to wipe out the productive sector of this nation, we cannot take the easy way out,” he said.

He added that with the CSME to take effect soon many persons will suffer tremendously as a result of the free movement of persons from different islands, “We must ensure that CSME provides for our well being, especially the poor,” he said.

Bishop Friday strongly urged the general public not to let the difficulties and setbacks deter them from achieving the common good.

Members of the different church denominations offered intercessory prayers for the nation as many lifted their hands to the sky exalting the holy name of the Lord in celebration of our anniversary.
