Villagers join fight against fire bug

Residents of Spring Village joined the fight against forest fires and environmental degradation through community education and awareness campaign on the importance and need for conservation of forests.

They erected signs warning about the danger of forest fires at Louis Hill Gordon Hill and C’Bell Hill in Spring Village and planted trees on Louis Hill.{{more}}

Spring Village is an important water catchment area where water is harvested for the production of hydroelectric power as well as for potable use by the Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA).

In addition, some areas are at risk of landslides and flashfloods.

As a result of it’s uniqueness as well as challenges, early warning devices to alert communities downstream of potential flashfloods, early warning devices have been installed by the Special Program and Adaptation for Climate Change (SPACC).

The signs were produced in collaboration with Karib Cable. Stakeholders included the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC), and Environmental Consultants who focused on ways to reduce the incidence of bush fires for the protection of the national resources in the community.

Fifteen Grade Six students of the Spring Village Methodist School assisted the Forestry Department in planting trees on Louis hill, one of the areas burned every year.
