Lonique makes Soroptmists proud

The longevity of Soroptimist International in St Vincent and the Grenadines is assured. That is, if 16-year-old Lonique Wallace has anything to do with it.

At a brief ceremony at the group’s New Montrose headquarters on Tuesday, Wallace, who has been the recipient of a scholarship from the professional women’s organization since 2004, expressed her desire to one day become a member of the group.{{more}}

The aspiring soil engineer was among this nation’s top performers in the 2006 CXC CSEC examination. She passed 10 subjects, receiving grade ones in Biology, English A, French, Mathematics, Physics and Principles of Business and grade twos in Chemistry, English B, Geography and Information Technology.

President of the group, Dr Shirley Robertson, expressed the club’s pleasure with Lonique’s performance, and committed themselves to supporting her for a further two years while she attends the Community College where she will pursue studies in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics.

The sincerity of the former Girls’ High School student was evident in her voice as she thanked the Soroptimist members for their moral, spiritual and financial support at a time when she needed it most.

Lonique’s success comes two years after she lost her mother in tragic circumstances. Her mother’s murderer remains at large. Silma Wallace was found dead shortly after 6 a.m on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at White Chapel Road, Kingstown. Besides Lonique, Silma had three other children, who were at the time seven years, 1-year-8 months and eight months old.

Another student, Sherisia Lynch, a third former at the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown has also been the recipient of a $1200 annual scholarship from the service club since 2004.
