PM wants faster progress on Agri Institute

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has chided the Ministry of Agriculture for being “too slow” in their efforts to get started on matters relating to the Agri-Training Institute. Dr. Gonsalves was speaking at the Opening Ceremony of an Agricultural exhibition which was staged last Wednesday at the Methodist Church Hall as part of the celebration of the twenty fifth anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and this country.{{more}}

He however advised that the country should look more to farming on a commercial basis rather than subsistence farming.

Continuing, the Prime Minister pointed out that we have vast amount of lands here which were not being utilised and the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture was in the process of identifying persons to whom to lease these lands.

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Montgomery Daniel, speaking at the opening said that the artistic presentation that was on display signals how far St. Vincent and the Grenadines has come and how much Taiwan and our country have benefited from the expertise of each other. Minister Daniel said that the Technical cooperation has really borne fruit to the extent where innovations and technologies introduced by the Taiwanese Agricultural Mission have helped in the transformation of the Agricultural Sector.

At the end of the opening ceremony, persons got a chance to view and taste some of the mouthwatering fruits that were on display from the Agro processing, economic crop, plant tissue culture and farmer exhibition categories.
