Seven get GECCU scholarships

The General Employees Cooperative Credit Union is continuing its assistance to students here. Since the scholarship programme started 1981, there have been 115 awards. The figure increased by seven last Wednesday with a presentation to the newest recipients.

The number includes one from the Grenadines for the first time. That person is Dijhon Alexander a former Ashton Government School student. He enters the Thomas Saunders Secondary when the school year starts. The others are Mbeki Swift, Kaylia Toney, Tahj Marksman, Donella Power, Roselle Snagg and Taj Lee.{{more}}

The scholarships will be tenable for a period of five years, with an option of a two-year extension if the students qualify for either the Community College or the Technical College.

The scholarship holders would receive $1,400 for the first three years and $1,600.00 for forms four and five. The extension is valued at $1,600 for the other two years.

In addition to the scholarships, a number of students received bursaries compliments GECCU.

The presentation ceremony took place at the Kingstown Methodist Church Hall.

The 1991 GECCU scholarship winner, Colin Sam, who teaches Mathematics at the St. Vincent Grammar School, gave the feature address. He used as the basis of his address three words: Logic, Change and Potential.

He encouraged students to be logical, and adapt to change in order to maximise their full potential.

The programme also heard remarks from GECCU’s President Angela Martin, manager Lennox Bowman, Senior Education Officer Muriel Fraser, and GECCU’s Scholarship chairman Marva Cato/Robinson.
