Sir Louis wants more houses

Outgoing Central Leeward representative, Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Louis Straker is still not satisfied with the 16 additional new houses handed over to recipients last Tuesday.

He pointed to the 160 applications made for the expanded community, and declared “We need more.” {{more}}

Straker, parliamentary representative from February 21, 1994, outlined that “the land is there.” He alluded to available land at Mt. Wynne and suggested that 200 houses could be constructed there.

Sir Louis pointed out that his government was working “hard on the people’s behalf.” He spoke of future developments planned for Central Leeward and used the occasion to recap his accomplishments, also in Central Leeward. He repeated his intention to leave active politics and declared: “Even though, I may move off the scene, that is not the end of it.”

As far as Sir Louis was concerned, “We have been doing a great work in Central Leeward.” He urged the new homeowners to “take care of them” and encouraged them do the best they could to maintain their surroundings.

The residents collected keys to their new homes in a lively ceremony on the site in the recently created community.

In March 2004, the first set of homeowners was handed the keys to newly built three bedroom and two bedroom structures. Some 57 residences were delivered in March 2004.

The function was marked by strong government presence. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves gave the feature address. Housing Minister Senator Julian Francis, Chairman of the Housing and Land Development Corporation Beresford Phillips, as well as HLDC’s General manager Brian George addressed the gathering.
