Youlou Art Camp pleases wife of late Dr. Earle Kirby

Widow of the late, great, Dr. Earle Kirby, expressed satisfaction with what was displayed by the Youlou Art Foundation after the just concluded Summer Art Camp.

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT at the camp’s closing ceremony held at the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, Monica Kirby said that all the work done by the young artists was interesting and jokingly suggested that her late husband, had he been around, would have found himself in the middle of everything that was happening.{{more}}

Youlou Arts, founded in 2000 started hosting an annual camp in 2001 entitled “The Growing Young SVG Artistes”. The camp has been such a success that in 2003 it branched out and expanded to three locations, with each location coaching about 40 eager, excited youngsters.

The annual camp starts on the Monday after Carnival, following a three-day training workshop for the camp coordinators, beginning the Wednesday after the Carnival festivities. The three-week camp was held in Georgetown, Barrouallie and Kingstown.

Director of Youlou Arts, Camille Saunders-Musser said that she was satisfied with the achievement of this year’s camp and was happy to honour the late Dr. Earle Kirby. Students were given information about the Vincentian icon, and part of their assignment included creating booklets in tribute to Dr. Kirby. The art projects that they undertook also followed the theme of the various interest of Dr. Kirby during his lifetime, including Vincentian wildlife and our indigenous people. “Dr. Kirby was instrumental in teaching us all about our history so it was fitting to make him this year’s theme,” said a pleased Saunders-Musser. She also thanked the various sponsors of this year’s camp including Digicel, The National Lottery’s Authority, The National Commercial Bank and Karib Cable.
