Vincentian designer brings experience to local art form

Sherelene Smith-Cuffe is an ambitious Vincentian. She left here in 1998, having marked her existence in a number of ways including being a vocalist with the band X-A-Dus.

Smith-Cuffe has since taken up a new career in her adopted land of England, and has pursued spheres of interest, which have made her an outstanding artist.{{more}}

Mother of three (including a 19-year-old son and daughters 15 and 13), Cuffe has just finished a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and teaches at Leeds College of Arts and Design.

The designer has specialised in a field where she uses mainly textiles and printmaking techniques. She was home recently and used the occasion of the Emancipation Month activities to show her talent.

Smith-Cuffe pointed out that the idea of taking part in the exhibition was to get people familarised with her work.

She has also been researching the Garifuna language and in her words: “Looking into my own cultural background.”

Cuffe originally from Richmond Hill, overlooking capital City Kingstown, is hoping that her talent could be channeled into some direction.

“What I would like to do is to be given the opportunity to do workshops, teach in schools, and do some exhibitions,” Smith-Cuffe said.

Smith-Cuffe is pleased with the response received so far, which she describes as “very good.”
