NYC youth camp ends

The 2006 NYC regional work/study camp ended last weekend at the Brighton Government School. The camp which forms part of the National Youth Council’s Programme of Action for this year, was under the theme “Sports: the Anti-Drug; Anti HIV/AIDS” and ran from July 29 to August 6, 2006.{{more}}

Objectives of the camp:

• To heighten the awareness of 80 young persons about issues relevant to drug use as HIV/AIDS tool.

• To train 80 young persons to be effective anti-drug advocates.

• To engage and involve the residents of the Brighton community in activities that would foster and encourage the development of sustainable and healthy lifestyles.

• To work along with the Christian Council Young Advocates and the HIV/AIDS Unit to impact on the use of and trade in illicit drugs among the youth population.

Delegates for the camp were from Montserrat, St. Kitts/Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Trinidad, Tobago, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The areas covered at the camp were: HIV/AIDS done by resource persons from the Planned Parenthood Association and the HIV/AIDS Unit; Disaster Preparedness done by Deputy Director of NEMO Michelle Forbes; the much talked about CSME conducted by delegates on the camp in a form of a rap session; youths, sports, education and skills done by Managing Director Finishing and Furnishing OT Mayers; a trip to Dark View Falls and sporting events.
