‘Shaping the future’

The St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown launched their RBTT Young Leaders project for 2005-2006 at the school last Friday.

The theme for this year’s programme is, “Shaping the future, cherishing life, Embracing family values, respecting one another.” The theme was further broken down into a sub theme, “Uniting to enhance family values, pushing towards a brighter future.” {{more}}

President of the Young Leaders, Roscian Charles said, with the themes given, they are hoping to target the elderly persons in various communities and also the youth.

Charles also said she thinks the theme is timely and appropriate in today’s world filled with various ills. “Our community is witnessing a breakdown in family values. An increase in domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, and drugs are evidence of some of the ills plaguing our society today,” she said.

Charles stated that there is a need for refocusing and that her school will endeavor to focus on community outreach for the elderly and educational programs geared towards the youth. She assured that the members of the young leaders would work hand in

hand to ensure that their project is a success.

Guest speaker, Cammie Matthews of the Social Welfare Department, urged the Young Leaders to be focused and place emphasis on family values: “If you think highly of yourself, it will be portrayed in your lifestyle.”

Their first task as a group is a community outreach project. They will be distributing food baskets to the elderly persons in nearby communities.
