When school reopens September 6, Kareem Thompson and Lori Ann Glasgow will be well equipped for secondary education.
Kareem, a former Petersville pupil, enters St. Vincent Grammar School, while Lori Ann, an ex- Kingstown Preparatory School student, will be at Girls’ High School.{{more}}
They are recipients of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cooperative Credit Union 2004 Secondary Common Entrance Examination Scholarships.
The bursaries run for five years with each student receiving $650 per year. That will be $400 for the first term and $125 for the second and third terms.
They received their first year’s package last Monday at the Teachers Cooperative Credit Union in Kingstown.
Kareem, age ten, placed third for boys and seventh overall with 88 for math, 85 general paper and 84 for English.
His mother, Currell Thompson from the North Leeward town of Chateaubelair, has been a teacher for the past 20 years. She is doing a Masters in Environmental Studies at York University, Canada.
Lori Ann is an 11-year-old former Kingstown Preparatory School student. Originally from the South Windward district of Calder, she placed 8th for girls and 13th overall with 85 for both math and general paper, and 74 for English.
Both students expressed gratitude to their teachers and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cooperative Credit Union. Lori Ann’s mother, Gloria Glasgow, responded: “Thanks to God.”
The presentation heard remarks from President Curtis King and Development Officer Byron Wilson.
The Cooperative Credit Union’s membership stood at 4,580 at the end of last year. The Credit Union has been giving two scholarships to members’ children since 1996. About 30 students have benefited from the assistance to Common Entrance students since the Credit Union started 26 years ago.
King encouraged students to make the best of their education.
Wilson referred to book vouchers given to members’ children who passed Common Entrance but did not get a scholarship.
