âNext year, I going for the Soca!â Aurella âQueen Bâ Beache proudly declared, after copping the Best New Ragga Song title, last Saturday at the launch of Vincy Mas.{{more}}
Performing the song âNice and Sweetâ, Beache beat last yearâs winner Shernelle âSkarpyonâ Williams, who did âWine Nâ, into second place and last yearâs runner up in the Soca category, Tamisha Nichols, who did âGoody Goodyâ, into third.
This was her second win in competition, in as many outings, having won the Best Calypso category in 2011 with her hit then âProtest Fuh Datâ.
She credits her success to confidence, saying that the past experiences in her life have enabled her to do well on the stage.
âI was very confident about what I was doing,â she told SEARCHLIGHT, adding that dropping the focus from the people gave her an edge to go out and do her thing without fear of ridicule or criticism.
According to Beache, the experience came during her stint as a singer on the Carnival Cruise Lines, where she said she encountered racism and had to settle for second fiddle among the Caucasian performers.
She further explained that she has had to constantly prove herself to those around her and that she has built enough motivation to show people that she does not care what other people think.
âI am good at my job and you all deal with it,â she said.
She boasted that she has already conquered the Calypso Best New Song competition and will be looking to win the Soca category in 2013.
âI feel good. I had a lot to prove and I wanted to show some people that you donât hold me – I am versatile, I can do a lot of things. I had a lot to prove and I did that,â she said.
Front man for the band Akcess, Travis âWiz Kidâ Lynch doing âRagz Upâ, Denis âVyrusâ Samuel (âThat Wineâ) and Glenroy âHomeyâ Delpesche (In de session) rounded up the other contenders in the Ragga Soca category. (DD)
