First Lady making headway on the local, regional music scene

With her catchy phrase “Ah no if, no but, nor maybe”, SVG’s top female dance hall artiste First Lady is looking to propel her career to a higher level for 2012.{{more}}

Born October 26, 1985, Vasita “First Lady” Caine made her entrance on to the music scene in 2007 at the Victoria Park as opening act for Jamaican Artiste Tony Matterhorn in front of an estimated crowd of 5,000 persons.

From the first minute she spent on stage, it was clear that this vibrant young lady was here to stay.

Charismatic, sexy and lyrically lethal are words that could be used to describe the fast-rising dance hall artiste, or “deejay”, as that type of artiste is known in dance hall circles.

In an exclusive interview with SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday, Caine disclosed that it was while she was a student at the St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua that she discovered her musical abilities.

She also said it was during those secondary school years that she obtained her stage name “First Lady”.

“They used to have free style battles, and there were over thirty males with me, the only female competing. From that, persons started telling me that I am the first lady they’ve seen doing this, and from there the name stuck.”

Her first recording was done in 2007, the same year she earned her first major appearances on a number of shows as the opening act for artiste such as Tony Matterhorn, Mr. Vegas and Dr Evil, among others.

According to the Park Hill resident, this gave her exposure, and soon after, First Lady began to gain a reputation for her blistering lyrics, high energy and risqué stage performances.

Between 2009 and 2011, the female deejay made a number of appearances locally, regionally and internationally, during which she delivered excellent performances in front of thousands of her growing fans.

Some of First Lady’s stage performances included her September 2011 opening for Jamaican Artist Romaine Virgo.

In July 2011, she was invited by the Hon. Vice Council of Jamaica Brian Cottler to perform in Montreal, Canada, at Caribana Festival, where an estimated 40,000 persons attended the concert.

First lady also headlined alongside Grenadian Soca artiste Talpree in July 2011 at a show called “We Carnival Montreal” in Montreal, Canada.

She was also guest performer at Vincy Picnic for Caribana celebrations in Montreal, Canada, back in July 2011, and during that same month, she was the headline for a show at EB Lounge in Montreal, Canada, for the Caribana Festival.

During the period, First Lady has recorded a number of hit songs that have been in rotation on radio stations locally, regionally and internationally.

Tracks such as “Kitchen Dunce”, “Ahh Nah Nuttun” and “Good Ohh” are popular songs among the Vincentian community, and on numerous occasions, local Djs can be heard selecting these songs in the clubs.

In December 2011, she released her first video, which was a medley.

Under the management of re-known St. Kitts based SKN Entertainment, First Lady continues to gain the attention from the music fraternity.

Most recently, top Jamaican Production Company “CASH FLOW RECORDS” commended the female artiste for her 2012 hit song “Send on Di Money”, which is a counteraction to Jamaican recording artiste Baby Cham song entitled “Wine”, on the “School Bag Riddim”.

Outside of music, Caine told SEARCHLIGHT that one of her hobbies is “listening music.”

“I love music, and whenever I am not recording, I’m listening.”

First Lady says her intention is to continue excelling in her musical career, by branding her name on the international scene.

“While I am somewhat satisfied with the reception on the local and regional scene, my plan for this year is to continue branding the name First Lady on the international market.

“I want for persons out there to hear and experience the musical talent Vincentians have,” First Lady stated.
