Aviar Charles, Miss SVG 2011, will participate in the 50th Annual Jaycees Caribbean Queen Show; and Sheridan Haynes, second runner-up at Miss SVG 2011, will take part in the 6th Miss Caribbean Culture Queen Pageant.
Charles, who placed first runner-up at the 2011 Miss Carival pageant, will leave the state on Monday, July 25, for Antigua and Barbuda, accompanied by her chaperone Annette Francois.
She will be judged in Interview (60 points), Swimwear (50 points), Talent (50 points), Evening Wear/ Modelling Skills (30 points), and Best Dress (30 points).
At the pre-show – taking place at the Sugar Ridge Resort – scheduled for Wednesday, July 27, contestants will appear in national dress and deliver an introductory speech, which will not be judged. They will, however, be judged on that night in Swimwear and Cocktail Attire.
On Friday, July 29, contestants will be judged in the remaining categories.
Twenty countries, including SVG, are expected to send representatives to compete in this event – many of whom participated in the Miss Carival 2011 pageant.
Last year the pageant was won by Miss Dominica, Marcia Baptiste. Miss Anguilla, Sangreena Harris, took first runner-up, and Miss St. Kitts and Nevis, Sudeakka Francis, placed second runner-up.
This yearâs pageant will take place under the theme âIntegrating the Caribbean through Pageantryâ.
Meanwhile, Sheridan Haynes will leave the state for St. Kitts and Nevis on Thursday, July 21, to take part in Miss Caribbean Culture Queen Pageant; chaperoned by Merlon Yearwood.
For the first time in the history of the show, it will be judged in two tiers – according to pageant chairperson Hazel Francis in an interview on Dominica New Online.
The theme for this yearâs pageant is âBridging the Gap – One Caribbean Peopleâ.
On Saturday, July 23, contestants will make their first appearance at Carnival Village in Bassterre, to be judged in the Swimwear segment. It carries 40 points.
On Monday, July 25, the contestants will sport ambassadorial wear and make island promotional speeches at the Charlestown Cultural Complex on sister island Nevis.
They will then be judged in Talent (50 points), Evening Gown (40 points), Question and Answer competition (40 points); and make additional appearances in their swimwear.
Last year Miss Anguilla Sangreena Harris won the competition. First runner-up went to Miss Trinidad and Tobago Keda Pascal, and Miss St. Kitts and Nevis Lanein Blanchette took second runner-up.
Haynes will return to state on Tuesday, July 26, while Charles will return on Sunday, July 31.
This is the first time that both young women will be competing in regional pageants. The Beauty Shows Committee and SEARCHLIGHT Newspaper wish them the best of luck, and encourage them to represent SVG to the best of their capabilities.(JV)
