Young talent surfaces on fashion design scene

Young blood pumped strongly through the veins of the Vincentian fashion scene as local talent Karen De Freitas presented her designs for the first time at the Carnival Catwalk 2.

Gaining the crowds approval, her roots inspired designs floated down the catwalk, showing a penchant for texture and the colour red.{{more}} DeFreitas said the world of clothing enticed her at age 11, as she has been sketching designs ever since. Of her work, she said she aims to complement the shape of a woman, adding that she receives her inspiration from other clothing, nature, and even in the realm of dreams.

Along with formal training, she said her “personality and need to be unconventional” as well as her background in art, will help her to gain her ultimate goal of becoming an haute couture designer. While applying to schools, De Freitas will be taking the next year off the learn how to sew, a skill she says all professional designers must have under their belt.

Of her opportunity with Mije and Jean-Johnney Findlay, she says she has “gained not only experience, but encouragement and motivation”, adding that such opportunities will aid her growth within the fashion world. (KP)
