Carnival judges get certification

When the results are announced at various carnival events over the next ten days, competitors and fans alike can rest assured that the decisions, which will be final, were made by a group of competent judges who knew exactly what they were looking for.{{more}}

Persons can be assured of this, following the certification of 14 judges in the various components of carnival.

The judges received their certificates at a special presentation ceremony on Tuesday evening at the headquarters of the Carnival Development Corporation at Victoria Park.

The judges who have been involved in the process over the years began their final session in May this year, and successfully completed examinations before certification.

During their training, the judges dealt with various aspects such as the role of judges, judging objectively, and the conduct and responsibility of judges.

Co-coordinator and trainer of judges Christina Yorke, expressed her satisfaction with the work covered by the judges, and believes that the quality of judging this year will exceed previous years by far.

Although there will be judges coming in from Trinidad and Tobago to complement the locals, Yorke, a Tobagonian with Vincentian roots believes that the ‘home grown’ judges will hold their own on competition nights.

At the presentation ceremony, the judges were congratulated by CDC chairman Dennis Ambrose and Minister of Culture Rene Baptiste(Photo above right).

Both speakers acknowledged that the role of the judge, which is usually a thankless job, is vital in the evolution and development of carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
