Old venue, new stage for De Baron
His first performance in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was at the Aquatic Club, and ironically 30 years later, he headlined the inaugural fete signaling the grand re-opening of the entertainment land mark, after a number of years absence from the scene.{{more}}
In a rare and brief interview after thrilling the near to capacity crowd, soca veteran De Baron proclaimed that this country is his home away from home.
The singer, born Timothy Watkins, heralded praise for the club, saying that although it may be under new management, âAquatic is still Aquatic.â
The veteran belted out a number of his classics to the highly receptive audience, and was called back twice after his first exit from the stage.
Saturday nightâs event also witnessed the re-launch of the band Signal, who boasted their songs for 2007, and a number of new band members including Digicel Rising Star Kyron Baptiste. Other artistes like reigning calypso monarch I-Pa, the Poorsah, Alla G and Galinaire also performed.
Although most patrons were appreciative of the performances and the fact that there is a somewhat ânewâ option when it comes to entertainment here, a few shortcomings of the facility were raised and brought to the attention of management.
These were mainly the sound quality in the new soundproof facility.
There were also complaints that the new air-conditioned hall was still too warm for comfort. And the extra spacious facility did not provide sufficient seating for patrons wishing to sit. Management promised to address these concerns.
Meanwhile, tomorrow, the club will host Jamaican reggae artiste Daville, famous for his hit song âAlways on my mindâ.
The show begins at 9pm and will feature local artistes like Fireman Hooper, Icon and Zola.
