The 18-year-old Emmanuel High School, Mesopotamia student won the Miss East St.George 2004 Pageant last Friday during the first leg of the East St.George 2004 Carnival which started at Club Marcomay in Villa.
Baynes took the majority of the points while competing in a group of eight other contestants.
The estactic young lady used words like “excited, great” and “unbelievable” to describe her feelings when her name was called and she was crowned by Miss East St.George 2003 Nerissa Ollivierre.
“I could not believe it,” said Baynes who worships at the Revival Centre Pentecostal Church in Murray’s Village where she resides.
“I still can’t get over,” adds Baynes as she recalls winning only one segment of the pageant. She gained the judges’ nod for best interview. Her questions were based on her Christian values, as stated in her autobiography.
Baynes, who will take part in another pageant in Bequia this Sunday, says that ever since she was small, she had dreamed about taking part in a pageant.
“I always wanted the exposure, so now I have an idea how to react to a crowd who might not always be backing you,” said Baynes. She revealed that she sang her Britney Spears talent rendition of “I’m not a girl” with her eyes closed because she was scared.
For winning the show, Baynes was given a trophy, EC$1000, dinner for two at the Young Island Resort and a trip for two to any Caribbean Island of her choice.
First runner-up was Shanel Byron, while second runner-up and best talent went to Alisha Williams.
Malone Gardener was adjudged best evening gown and most courteous, Marika Haynes got the judges’ nod in swimwear while Miss Photogenic was Allana John. The other contestants were Abigail Sterling and Melissa Edwards.
