Deciding on what works best for you

You are going to have to make some decisions by yourself when picking out a kitchen for your house, some decisions, if you don’t make them someone else would make them for you and you may not necessarily like what they choose, so here are a few pointers this week.{{more}}

Decision # 1: The first shelve in the base of your cabinet: Do you want to leave it open or do you want to have it closed off with plywood or what ever the material is that the company is using to make your kitchen? If you close it off, beware that it would look very beautiful and finished, BUT you would be creating a 4” space in the entire bottom of your cabinet as a hotel for rodents, roaches and termites. This can dramatically shorten the life of your kitchen because they would eat the wood of your cabinet from there and you may find out when its too late.

Termites cannot eat some hard wood and some MDF, but the space would still be there for roaches, rats or any other rodents to live. Hardwood is too tough for termites to eat and MDF is too bitter. If you leave it open, then you can control what goes there and what stays there or you can fill it up to about 1/2” to the rim with sand and broken blocks etc from around the house and then concrete the top, we advise strongly that you do not pour concrete into the entire base. It is useless, it is expensive and it creates problems for your children or grand children when they are ready for a new kitchen.

Filling up that space eliminates any possible chances for termites to live in the bases. It doesn’t mean they can’t live anywhere else… We’ll talk more next week.
