Thirteen

Hello Thirteen,

This is a seemingly simple question, but it carries a serious punch. Some people may say you are only thirteen and why would you want to know about sex? I think it’s quite the opposite, you SHOULD know about it so you can make the very best decisions for yourself going forward.

It is very normal to have questions and be curious about sex. Your body is changing, you have so many hormonal things happening, and some that you can’t even control at times, it can be a bit overwhelming. But no need to panic, you aren’t the only one going through this.

Also let me tell you something else. You may be hearing a lot of your friends talking about having sex and how good it is and perhaps how good they are at it, but don’t buy it! Many people have a lot to say, but their stories aren’t even close to being the truth – it’s all a front to try to fit in.

Look, in my opinion, you are still too young to jump into the world of sex and the responsibilities and headaches that come with it. What headaches? How about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV or even AIDS? You can even become a father at that young age – can you imagine being responsible for someone else and you can’t even pay your bus fare to school? You may also say there are contraceptives, I would say definitely educate yourself about them, but let me tell you, there are many people here on this earth today whose parents thought that contraceptives had them covered. Nothing is 100% fool proof – only abstinence.

At the end of the day, your safety and your health are top priority, ask yourself if you even need this level of drama at this stage? Also never forget that a lot of your friends are in your boat, confused and pressured. So lead the way and take a stance that you will wait until you feel stronger, more mature and independent enough to make this decision. I think you are very smart for asking this question, continue to be a leader my friend.
