Elections petition case resumes Monday

The election petition case which challenges to the parliamentary eligibility of Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday and Foreign Minister Fitzgerald Bramble over their dual citizenships, will continue on Monday, September 28, 2026 and is slotted to end on Friday, October 2, 2026.

The Petitioners are Luke Browne and Carlos Williams, unsuccessful candidates for the Unity Labour Party (ULP) in the November 27, 2025 general elections, while the respondents are Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday (Northern Grenadines M.P) and Foreign Affairs Minister Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble (East Kingstown M.P) both of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

The petitioners concluded their presentations on June 29, 2026.

Lead attorney for the petitioners Stuart Young told SEARCHLIGHT that he is looking forward to the next stage in the matter which will deal with the respondents’ case in evidence.

Lead counsel for the respondents Anand Ramlogan, had stated: “This is a very interesting election petition, given the overwhelming mandate given by the people to Prime Minister Friday and his government”.

“… you know we see the wheels of justice and democracy interacting and we are very confident about this matter. We feel that justice will prevail in the end and the Honourable Prime Minister will be vindicated in the position he has taken. He has never made it a secret that he holds dual citizenship,” Ramlogan added.

Meanwhile, the Dr. Godwin Friday led administration had sought to table two Bills in Parliament which would have the effect of making anyone holding dual citizenship eligible to hold electoral seats in Parliament. The bills, which were subsequently deferred, were aimed at clarifying a section of the 1979 St Vincent and the Grenadines Constitution governing the citizenship eligibility of members of parliament.
