Garifuna chefs share indigenous cuisine at KTI
Garifuna Chefs Olga Leiva, Zulma Bermudez, Silvia Leiva y Nilson Gamboa, part of the visiting Garifuna delegation for the National Hero’s Day celebrations, in St Vincent and the Grenadines, imparted Garifuna cuisine preparation to the Food Preparation and Cookery CVQ level 2 class at the Kingstown Technical Institute (KTI) earlier this week.
On Monday, March 16, 2026 the team spent the morning teaching the class how to prepare several Garifuna dishes, which their teacher, Kathleen Samuel, saw as a great initiative.
Principal Caroline Nedd, said she was honoured that the institute was the one selected for the partnership.
“I’m happy to see all things come together, and everybody showed appreciation for the food and how tasty it was,” she said.
“I must say I am honoured and appreciate that they chose the institute for this. I think the students learnt a lot, the tools they used that they knew nothing about,” Nedd commented.
The General Counsel of Guatemala to New York, Victor Ramirez, who is visiting SVG for the first time as part of the Garifuna Conference, explained to SEARCHLIGHT that they wanted to share with the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines the history of Guatemala, so they decided to prepare the food from the Garifuna people in his country. And, Garifuna Leader Carlos Gamboa, was gratified with the partnership initiative.
