Police fighting each other over weed, COP wants reversal in Amended Drugs Act
One of the deans of discipline at the West St George Secondary School says that marijuana laws, and how these relate to underage students, as well as a lack of care from some areas of law enforcement are creating serious issues at the institution. And Commissioner of Police, Enville Williams said even in the constabulary, there are problems of marijuana use and he would like to see a reversal in the aspects of the amended Drugs Act.
Dennie said that while there currently is a lot of talk about the violence at the West St George and other schools, people are not looking at the issue of drugs, which is sometimes directly and indirectly linked to the violence.
“We have a very serious problem of marijuana use on the compound…sometimes we collect up to 30 packets (of marijuana from one student) and the problem basically is this, that our hands are tied,” Dennie said at a forum that was organised to seek solutions to problems at secondary schools.
“I’m not really okay with the law in terms of marijuana usage and all that. I don’t smoke marijuana, so it’s not my cup of tea, but what I see happening…there needs to be a change when it comes to the Constitution or when it comes to marijuana use, especially among minors,” Dennie stated.
The teacher spoke on the issue during a consultation at the National Insurance Services (NIS) conference room on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 which was held under the theme “Safer Schools, Safer Communities”.
