Taking away lands offered to people is ‘playing with fire’ – Dr Ralph Gonsalves
Opposition Leader Dr, Ralph Gonsalves, has warned that the New Democratic Party (NDP) administration “ is playing with fire” in its handling of a land distribution issue which was started by the Unity Labour Party administration.
Speaking on Star Radio on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Dr. Gonsalves charged that the NDP administration is “threatening to take away lands which were offered to the people”.
Under the previous administration, several persons received Cabinet approved offer letters for the purchase of lands in various areas in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Dr. Gonsalves said there are people who have already paid instalments, but are now being turned away when they try to make further payments for the said land.
He charged that the new administration is “telling people at Land and Surveys don’t accept any more money” from persons paying for these lands, and concludes that this is being done purely for political reasons. He said he is prepared to go to jail in defence of the people in this matter.
Dr. Gonsalves also read from a letter he said was sent to him by someone who had received an offer letter for lands at San Souci, but was now being blocked from making further payments.
The person claims to have already made payments on the land but was prevented from doing so on March 4,2026 when someone at the Lands and Surveys Department informed him that they were not taking any more money.
Dr. Gonsalves on Wednesday, encouraged other persons who are facing the same predicament, to contact a lawyer and to also lodge a complaint with the People’s Defence Committee of the ULP representative in their constituency.
“We will follow up on this. We are going to have a big fight on matters like this,” the Opposition Leader challenged.
The lands in question were said to have been offered to persons at $4 per sq ft.
