No mass firings under NDP, says Deputy PM
Many people expected and wanted the New Democratic Party (NDP) to fire and transfer several public sector employees and workers at statutory corporations in ways that would have amounted to victimization, but the new administration says it is not about that.
That was made clear by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Disaster Management and Immigration Major St. Clair Leacock.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 on a YouTube programme called RideAlong Live with host, Junior George, Major Leacock said, “people” wanted mass firings when the NDP took office on November 27, 2025 after a 14-1 victory over the Unity Labour Party (ULP).
“I think that a lot of our people would have liked to see us get into the state where we are, literally speaking- changing all of the guard, you know- moving public servants around, whether they are part of the State or private companies or the government branch, changes to the administration, the management of various companies and so on and so forth,” the deputy prime minister told his host.
