Opposition Leader writes to Speaker on questions she deems inadmissible
LEADER OFTHE OPPOSITION Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has written to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Ronnia Durham-Balcombe, concerning her ruling of the inadmissibility of three questions submitted by the opposition for oral answers from the government at the meeting of Parliament scheduled for Thursday, January 29, 2026.
Speaking on his Monday morning programme on Star FM on January 26, 2026, Dr. Gonsalves said that he wrote in response to the Speaker’s January 21, 2026 letter in which she stated that three of the questions submitted by the opposition for oral answer were “inadmissible.”
The Speaker’s rationale for rejecting the three questions for oral answers are that the first question “infringes the provisions of Order 20 (e) of the Standing Orders of the House of Assembly, the question is lengthy as it seeks information on different aspects of the same subject”. The second “infringes the provisions of Order 20 (b) and (c) of the Standing Orders of the House of Assembly, the letter states. The question contains statement(s) of fact and/or inferences”; while the third reason is that it “infringes the provisions of Order 20 (e) of the Standing Orders of the House of Assembly. The question is lengthy as it seeks information on different aspects of the same subject.”
