Schools get in on World Food Day celebrations
World Food Day, celebrated annually across the globe on October, 16, to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was also being celebrated across St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Schools are among the organisations which every year, stage World Food Day activities, where they put on displays of produce and prepared food, and the Marriaqua Government School and the Kingstown Preparatory School were among the scores that were part of these celebrations.
At the Marriaqua Government School students and teachers displayed a variety of foods including traditional snacks, fruits, vegetables, and local juices. The primary school held its activities jointly this year with the nearby Early Childhood Centre, and the Marriaqua Methodist Pre-school.
Supervisor of the Early Childhood
Centre, Shirla Cox, told SEARCHLIGHT, “It is very important for children to know where the food comes from…it’s from the farm to the table, and it helps them to know that here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, we’re very fortunate to have food.”
She added that “It is very important for them to learn about these national things instead of artificial food…. As they grow up, they would learn how to plant them, grow them, and sell them”.
