Woman beater ordered to pay over $5,000 in compensation
A van conductor, who beat his five month pregnant ex-girlfriend after she refused to get back with him, was given a suspended sentence and was ordered to pay compensation. When Onez John first appeared in court on September, 2, 2025, he pleaded guilty to the offense of assault causing grievous bodily harm. Sentencing was postponed.
John appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika McKenzie, on September, 17,2025 where he was sentenced for assaulting Fanica Edwards, 31, of Mckies Hill on November, 15, 2024 causing grievous bodily harm.
After considering the sentencing guidelines, John’s guilty plea, as well as the nine days that John spent on remand, Senior Magistrate McKenzie sentenced him to 20 months and two weeks in prison. However, she suspended the sentence for 18 months.
John was also ordered to compensate Edwards the sum of $5,500; $1,100 of which was to be paid forthwith in default, he will face a one year prison sentence. The remaining $4,400 is to be paid by March, 31, 2026, or spend one year in prison.
