The original school was built in Sandy Bay, but was severely damaged during the volcanic eruptions in 2021, and since then, has been operating from Mt.Young in Georgetown.
Making opening remarks at the commemoration ceremony teacher, Roger Henry, said this anniversary period “is a time to connect, reflect and celebrate the journey we have endured thus far”.
Acting Principal, Raquel Warrick, also speaking at the ceremony, spoke about the development strides of the educational institution.
Warrick said the school now stands as a young adult, ready to make adult decisions.
“Our birth was one that took much planning on the part of our prime minister and the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
When it opened it doors, the school was faced with many challenges, but now students of the Sandy Bay Secondary School are competing and excelling in their education,” Warrick stated.
The principal said the school also has many success stories in sports and culture.
In his reflection, the school’s longest serving principal, Brandon Child reminded that the Sandy Bay Secondary School was established in September, 2005.
Prior to this, students who did not pass the primary exit exams either went to work on the Orange Hill Estate, or were sent to learn a trade.
When the school opened, he said it was an opportunity for 59 students to have a secondary education.
