Van conductor to be sentenced for beating pregnant ex-girlfriend
A van conductor, who beat his five- months pregnant ex-girlfriend after she refused to get back with him, has been remanded pending sentencing.
Onez John, 25, appeared at the Serious Offences Court, before Senior Magistrate Tammika McKenzie, on September, 2, 2025 where he pleaded guilty to assaulting Fanica Edwards, 31, of Mckies Hill on November 15, 2024, causing grievous bodily harm.
The facts as stated in court are that Edwards and John were in a common-law relationship for approximately two years which has since ended due to John’s abusive behaviour.
The court also heard that John was in the habit of threatening Edwards and her family.
On the date of the offence, at about 11:50 a.m, Edwards was at home in her yard when she saw John standing in the road close to her home.
Edwards’ daughter was playing in the road and ran to John when she saw him. After John picked up the child, Edwards went to get her daughter.
While trying to retrieve her, John was talking to Edwards about getting back together. However, she ignored him and he became angry.
John proceeded to strike Edwards to her face, squeezing her neck, and pushing her to the ground resulting in injuries to her neck and upper body.
