Building material disappear from the Mary Hutchinson Primary School
Police investigators on Union Island are said to be looking into the “disappearance” of building materials that were sent to the Southern Grenadine Island to repair a school there.
An investigation has also been launched into damage done to the electrical mains at the Mary Hutchinson Primary School prior to a scheduled inspection by the electrical inspectorate.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Works, Land, Surveys and Physical Planning, Montgomry Daniel, speaking on NBC Radio’s Morning Cup programme on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, explained that on Thursday, August 21, a team visited Union Island ahead of the opening of the new school term to ensure everything was in place.
He said that before the August 21 visit, the Buildings, Roads and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) sent (on Monday August 18), materials for work to be done at the Mary Hutchinson Primary School. The school was extensively damaged by Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.
“…the materials arrived and went on site on Monday, and by midday on Tuesday, August 19, some of the materials disappeared,” Daniel said, while adding that the materials had to be re-ordered so the contractor could continue the work.
