Teachers Union President decries treatment of teacher at Service Commissions Department

President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers Union (SVGTU), Oswald Robertson, has condemn the actions by police officers who arrested and detained teacher, Shermaine Joseph-Barnwell when she reported to have gone to hand in a letter of resignation at the Service Commissions Department last Monday, March 3, 2025.

“I want to say to the state that this is a clear violation, it is total abuse, it’s gender-based violence, and it is something that must not be tolerated at all cost….

“I think that the police have overstepped their boundaries, using excessive force,” Robinson commented in a video.

Robinson said that the union is very concerned about the matter, adding that the National Executive will be doing further deliberations to decide on their next steps regarding the matter.

“You don’t expect a police force to be treating human beings in this manner. We take note of the footage. I’m sure that we’d be advocating for social justice for one of our members,” Robinson said.
