Garifuna people receive great news for Heritage Month

The uninhabited island of Balliceaux has been acquired by the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

The acquisition of the treasured island, sacred to the Garifuna people, comes on the heels of an announcement made on Monday, January 13, 2025 by Minister of Finance Camillo Gonsalves, during his presentation of the 2025 Budget presentation. And, it fulfils an assurance by Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves that the island will be reclaimed either through purchase or by acquisition as it is an important part of Vincentian Heritage and patrimony.

Speaking in parliament on Thursday, March 6, 2025 Prime Minister Gonsalves said that as of March 5, 2025, Balliceaux is part of the patrimony of SVG.

The announcement was made to applause in the House of Assembly.

“The second publication reads as follows, whereas it is enacted under section three of the Land Acquisition Act, Chapter 322 that, if the Governor General considers that any land should be acquired for a public purpose, he may cause a declaration to that effect to be made.
