SVG grab 12 medals at Karate World Cup

THE 18-MEMBER St Vincent and the Grenadines team to the 2024 International Karate Daigaku (IKD) World Cup, returned with 12 medals.

Held at the Guyana National Gymnasium in Georgetown, Guyana, the Vincentian karatekas copped 3 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals.

Leading the way with gold medals was the trio of Amiyah Bascombe, Rishawn Roache and Adriel Bynoe.

Bascombe took gold in the Female 11-13 Brown belt Individual Kata; while Roache secured his in the Male brown Belt 14-16 Individual Kumite; and Bynoe in the Male 8-10 Black Belt Individual Kata.

Returning with silver medals were: Amiyah Bascombe, in the Brown Belt Female Individual Kumite; Liam Bollers, the Green/ Blue Belt Male 8-10 Individual Kata; Xonte O’ Brien, Liam Bollers; and Adrian Bynoe in the Green /Blue/ Purple Belt 8-10 Male Team Kata.

Returning bronze medals were: Aaron Mc Donald, in the 11-13 Male Black Belt Individual Kumite; J- Don Matthews in the Green/ Blue/ Purple Belt 17-19 Female Kata; Miles Richards in the Green/ Blue/ Purple Belt 8-10 Male Individual Kumite; Terrance Providence in the 17-19 Male Individual Kata; Terrance Providence, Isaiah Caesar and Rishaud Roache in the 17-19 Male Team Kata; and Claude Bascombe Jr. in the Male 20-39 Individual Kumite.

Meanwhile, Amiyah Bascombe and Sharv Stewart utilized their outing in Guyana, to pursue their First Dan belts.

Claude Bascombe Jr, President of the Hairouna Karate Federation(HKF), who, apart from competing, was a judge at the World Cup expressed satisfaction with the medal count of the Vincentian team.

“The team’s performance was creditable, and the results were much better than we anticipated… Having two medal hopefuls in the junior categories, we were able to exceed that expectation and made a good representation of ourselves which is indicative of the quality of Karate here in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Bascombe told SEARCHLIGHT.

Buoyed by the success and the potentialities of the sport, Bascombe Jr. added, “ Our performance in Guyana underscored a glimpse of the renaissance of Vincentian Karate in the regional and international competitions, something we hope will fuel interest for future hopefuls”.

As part of the upward trajectory of Karate, following the dip as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, the HKF for the first time, will host a summer camp from August 5- 23, 2024.

The camp will be geared towards sensitizing the community and building membership.
