Fourth Form GHS student is Miss Heritage 2010

Fourth form Business student of the Girls’ High School (GHS), Anya Frederick, is Miss Heritage 2010.{{more}}

Frederick, who had the massive crowd at the Aquatic Club chanting her name before the judges announced her winner, won four of the five judged categories, as she came up against five of her schoolmates on Friday, October 22.

She walked away with the best talent, best cultural wear, best ambassadorial speech and the Jo-ann Marshall trophy for best interview. Soleil Gonsalves, daughter of Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, copped the community spirited award and the first runner-up position. The Prime Minister, who was seated in the audience, seem to thoroughly enjoy each performance on the night.

Kathy Pitt took the second runner up spot.

The show saw the six young ladies representing the various cultures of different Caribbean Islands: Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua and Jamaica. Sadly, Fayasha Lewis, who was to represent Grenada, was absent from the pageant because of transportation problem coming from Troumaca.

The other young ladies contesting the crown were: Khandi Gordon, representing Jamaica; Lesma Griffith, representing Antigua; and Marsha Primus, representing St Lucia.

In her Ambassadorial speech, Frederick portrayed Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minster, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, speaking on the issue of finances and Trinidad’s partnership with other Caribbean Islands. For her talent, Frederick stepped on stage in an Air Hostess uniform, and took patrons for a ride by dancing the night away.

In the cultural wear segment, Frederick sashayed in a breathtaking dress designed by local designer, Lisa Cordice. The dress depicted shades of the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, which hugged her slender frame perfectly.

After being announced winner, Frederick said, “I am so happy. I did not expect to win everything,” she stated, as adoring supporters and schoolmates flocked stage side to hug and snap pictures with the new Miss Heritage. Frederick’s win will now see her representing her school in the National Secondary Schools’ Miss Heritage pageant, to be held in October 2011.

The aspiring psychologist will also have all of her CSEC subjects paid for by Equity Law Chambers. She received a Stereo compliments Courts, Jewelry from Ecko, and dinner for two at Young Island Resort.

All of the other competitors gave good accounts of themselves throughout the night and congratulated each other after the show ended. Soleil, who represented Dominica, expressed her disappointment at not winning the crown, but at the same time she said that her best friend, Anya, deserved to win. She, like Kathy Pitt, who represented Barbados, admitted she could have done much better in her talent.

Other entertainment on the night was provided by the Touch Down Dancers, La Gracia Dancers, Galanaire, and Ackeila Cornwall, the reigning National Secondary School Miss Heritage. The MC for the evening was Vynette Frederick. (KW)
